A Mission Greater Than Profit
Starting a business isn’t just about making money — it’s about making meaning. For veterans like myself, entrepreneurship is often a continuation of service, a new uniform in a different battlefield. The same discipline that once guided us through deployments, challenges, and the unexpected now fuels our drive to build, lead, and make an impact.
This blog — my first for frankdavis.us — is a raw, real look into how service can forge entrepreneurial fire, and how we, as veterans and digital leaders, carry our mission forward.
From Enlistment to Enterprise
At 19, I took an oath and put on the Air Force blues. I had no idea that moment would be the beginning of a journey that would span multiple military branches, shape my resilience, and ultimately drive me into a new kind of leadership — entrepreneurship.
Military service teaches more than tactical skill. It teaches:
- How to stay calm under pressure
- How to plan with precision
- How to adapt without warning
- How to put mission and people before ego
Those principles are the foundation of everything I’ve built: Media Pillars, the SDVOSB Network, and my broader vision for veteran business empowerment.
Military Values in the Business World
Let’s break down the key values the military instills — and how they translate into entrepreneurial advantages:
1. Discipline
Waking up at 5am to prepare for PT teaches you the power of habit. In business, discipline means showing up even when you’re tired, discouraged, or unsure. It’s how you push forward when everyone else quits.
2. Adaptability
Combat readiness means expecting the unexpected. That adaptability is priceless in business. Whether you’re responding to market shifts or handling customer challenges, you pivot fast — without losing momentum.
3. Mission Focus
Veterans don’t work aimlessly — everything is tied to a mission. In business, that mindset helps entrepreneurs stay aligned with purpose, and avoid distractions that don’t serve the big goal.
4. Leadership Under Pressure
In the military, you don’t get to lead only when things are easy. You lead through the storm. Entrepreneurs with service backgrounds don’t shy away from tough calls — they step into them.
Building Media Pillars: A Veteran-Owned Digital Force
When I founded Media Pillars, it wasn’t just about designing websites. It was about helping small businesses win online. I knew what it felt like to start from zero — and I knew the power of strategy, messaging, and visibility.
Today, Media Pillars is a full-service digital marketing agency serving businesses across the U.S., with a special commitment to veteran-owned and service-disabled veteran-owned businesses (SDVOSBs). We build brands with purpose.
The SDVOSB Network: A Rally Point for Veteran Entrepreneurs
The military taught me that strength comes from unity. The SDVOSB Network is my answer to that lesson — a platform where service-disabled veteran-owned businesses can connect, share resources, and grow together.
Whether it’s navigating government contracting, understanding certifications, or just finding support from those who “get it,” the SDVOSB Network is here to help veterans go further, faster — together.
The Reality of Transitioning: From Ranks to Risk
Let’s be honest: transitioning out of the military is hard. You lose your structure, your team, and a sense of mission. Entrepreneurship gave that back to me.
But it’s not easy. The stakes are high. You’re betting on yourself every day. And for those of us used to orders and structure, the blank page of civilian business can feel paralyzing.
Here’s what helped me:
- Finding a new why
- Building systems and processes that mimic military order
- Connecting with other veteran entrepreneurs
- Learning relentlessly
Real Talk: The Challenges Veteran Entrepreneurs Face
Even with the strengths we carry, veterans face unique challenges in business:
- Underfunding and lack of capital access
- Navigating civilian business norms and red tape
- Lack of marketing and technical skill
That’s why I invest in education, content, and mentorship for veteran business owners. It’s not enough to be tough — you’ve got to be visible, connected, and strategic.
